Jelena Ostapenko entered the quarter-final match at Wimbledon with exceptional “speed”. After a bad period, the Latvian clearly caught the wind in her sails. After unsuccessful tournaments on grass courts in Birmingham and Eastbourne, few expected the 14th racket in the world to go far in London. And she, against all odds, crushed her rivals one after another.Up until the quarterfinals, Ostapenko had not lost a single set during the tournament. She had defeated Yulia Putintseva 6:2, 6:3 in impressive fashion . Two days earlier, the Kazakh had dispatched Iga Świątek , who looked completely helpless in the second and third sets against the well-disposed tennis player. However, Ostapenko quickly cooled her ardor.

The 2017 Roland Garros champion looked incredibly confident on the court and entered the clash with Barbora Krejcikova as a clear favorite. However, she started the match with a false start. The Czech broke her in the third game and after a moment was leading 3:1. Krejcikova neutralized the greatest advantages of the “nightmare” Iga Świątek and took the first set with a score of 6:4 .In the second set, Ostapenko “shifted into higher gear” and was already leading 4:1. At that point, her game completely broke down, and her opponent managed to make up for the losses. The 32nd player in the WTA ranking led to a tie-break, in which she used her second match point and defeated Jelena Ostapenko . She has been waiting for a triumph over the Latvian since 2022.

As soon as things started to take a turn for the worse during the match, Ostapenko’s biggest problem was keeping her nerves in check. The Latvian is known for her explosive temperament and exceptional expression, and this was again evident in her rivalry with Krejcikova. At one point, the fans gathered in the stands witnessed some truly bizarre scenes.

The 27-year-old reacted nervously to setbacks, as did her coaching staff. In the second set, at 4:5, the Latvian lost her temper and began shouting at one of the coaches to leave the match . She made a characteristic hand gesture. The confused coaches began to ask her which of them should “disappear” from the stands. Tracy Austin did not fail to comment on the events.
