Madison Keys Saves Match Point To Edge Iga Swiatek In Australian Open Classic
In a brilliant outing, Madison Keys ousted world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in an intense Australian Open semifinal match. In a grueling two-hour and 35-minute contest, the 29-year-old American displayed great tenacity, saving a match point before sealing a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) victory. The American tennis star is advancing to the first Grand Slam final since 2017, and with this victory, she will meet two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Under the closed roof of Rod Laver Arena, the match was a real test of mental toughness and endurance. Given her 5-2 lead in the first set, Swiatek seemed poised for triumph throughout the event. Keys, though, staged an impressive rally ending in a deciding tiebreak and a thrilling ending a little after midnight.
Rollercoaster First Set
Iga Swiatek was dominant in the beginning, breaking Madison Keys’ serve three times straight. With her cool baseline game, the Polish star seemed well poised for a long-awaited championship match alongside Sabalenka. Although she dropped her own serve twice, the Polish tennis star scored the first set 7-5 thanks to crucial errors, including a backhand down the line.
The American, though, will not wither. After digging herself into a deep hole, Keys clawed back into contention, offering a glimpse of the fight that would define the rest of the match. Her late run in the first set suggested the tenacity she would exhibit next.
The second set was an assertion of whether the first one was difficult. Breaking Iga Swiatek right away and holding serve gave Madison Keys a 2-0 lead. The 23-year-old’s usually unflappable defense faltered as the American’s forehand started to control points.
The game changer came when Keys broke again and raced 4-0 ahead after several top service games. Totally overkilling Swiatek, she needed 19 minutes to secure the set 6-1 with three aces and a slew of winners. The great change in momentum prepared for a thrilling last set.
A Drama-Encrusted Decider
The third collection tested nerves since both sides started holding serve early on. Madison Keys displayed superb poise and delivered clutch shots at key times to keep Iga Swiatek under some pressure. Particularly notable was her seeming will to battle until the last shot.
Not backing down, Swiatek rescued several break points with magnificent shot-making at 4-all. It felt like Keys was losing the match when she was three break points down at 4-4. Still, the American erased all three points and retained serve to bring the score back level. She served some of her best serves of the evening, though.
An Exciting Ending For Madison Keys
Both players exchanged key points in the 10-point tiebreak that decided the match. Though Iga Swiatek got a 3-1 edge early, Madison Keys answered with a brilliant forehand winner to break back. The five-time Grand Slam champion was under pressure as the score climbed 7-6 in her favor, but a Polish unforced error allowed Keys back in the breaker.
Keys, level at 8-all, generated a mistake from Swiatek to gain a match point by seizing the moment as the reigning French Open champion hit a forehand long. Overcome by emotion, the 29-year-old was jubilant as Swiatek was devastated.
