As the 2024 tennis season draws to a close, all eyes are on World No. 1 Iga Świątek as she heads to Riyadh for the WTA Finals, hoping to defend her title. The Polish star, who has been at the top of women’s tennis for the better part of the past two years, will look to cap off another stellar season by holding onto the prestigious year-end championship crown. With the competition as fierce as ever, Świątek’s journey in Riyadh will be one of the major storylines to follow.

A Season of Highs and Lows:
Świątek began 2024 in formidable form, winning five titles within the first six months, including a dominant performance on clay at Roland Garros, where she secured her third French Open title. However, the second half of the year hasn’t been as smooth. Unexpected exits at Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the US Open saw Świątek’s iron grip on the tour loosen as Aryna Sabalenka, her biggest rival this year, rose to challenge her.

Despite the mid-season setbacks, Świątek has shown resilience by bouncing back with her eyes firmly set on the WTA Finals. Her decision to take a break from the Asian swing and make coaching changes by parting ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski and hiring the experienced Wim Fissette signals a fresh approach as she prepares for Riyadh.

The Road to Riyadh: Defending the Title:
The WTA Finals are a unique event. Only the top eight players in the world qualify, and Świątek will enter the tournament as the defending champion. Last year, she stormed through the field, winning all her matches and capturing the title without dropping a set. But defending that title will be no easy task.
The competition in Riyadh will be elite. Aryna Sabalenka, who has been vying with Świątek for the No. 1 spot all year, is in prime form. Having won titles at Cincinnati, the US Open, and Wuhan, Sabalenka is a serious threat to Świątek’s reign. Additionally, other top contenders like Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Jessica Pegula have all had standout seasons, and each will be eager to prove themselves on the big stage.

The Battle for Year-End No. 1:
One of the key narratives heading into Riyadh is the battle for the year-end World No. 1 ranking. Świątek currently holds a razor-thin lead in the rankings over Sabalenka. However, the points gap is so narrow that the outcome of the WTA Finals will determine who finishes the year as the top-ranked player in the world. If Świątek hopes to retain her No. 1 spot, she’ll likely need to win the title in Riyadh once again, especially since she’s defending the maximum 1,500 points from her undefeated run last year.

Sabalenka, on the other hand, can clinch the year-end top ranking by reaching the final, putting even more pressure on Świątek to deliver a stellar performance.
