Świątek entered her second-round match after beating Kamila Rakhimova 6-4, 7-6, while the Japanese player had defeated Daria Saville 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 in the previous round. This was their first direct clash.
It was clear from the start who was the world leader. Świątek quickly gained a huge advantage and won the first set 6-0 after 23 minutes.
The Japanese player only stood her ground in the second game of the second set, which lasted a dozen or so minutes. And it was Shibahara who won it. However, she did not follow through, because Świątek responded quickly with a “dry” victory on her serve, and then broke her opponent.
